Located on a rocky peninsula at the eastern foot of Strandzha Mountain, the town of Ahtopol is one of the southernmost and most historic settlements on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.

Administratively, Ahtopol is part of the Municipality of Tsarevo, Burgas Region, and is located on the territory of the Strandzha Nature Park, which emphasizes both its natural beauty and its rich cultural and historical significance.

Today, the city attracts visitors with its beautiful beaches.
The beach strip near the Korosiata area, located north of the city in the direction of Varvara, called the Central Beach of Ahtopol, is with fine sand and dunes, wide, with a length in the territory of Ahtopol of about 1400 meters, and together with the beach strip continuing to the northwest in the territory of the village of Varvara - a total of about two kilometers. The coastal seabed is shallow.
In addition to the central beach, there are a number of smaller beaches in the area of Ahtopol.

The main livelihood of the population is tourism and fishing, which is a natural continuation of its centuries-old maritime traditions.
Location and climate
The city is located on a rocky peninsula between Cape Ahtopol and Cape Sveti Yani, on an abrasion terrace.
To the west, right next to the city, the branches of the Strandzha hill Bosna reach, with the highest peak Papija (501.4 meters).

About four kilometers to the south, near the village of Sinemorets, is the mouth of the Veleka River.

The altitude in the city at the Church of the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which rises directly opposite the port, is about 10 meters, in the southwest it increases to about 30 - 35 meters.

Ahtopol is a seaside resort with hotels, holiday villages and bungalows, located mainly in the Korosiata area, west of the city, restaurants, numerous guest houses, entertainment venues and campsites.
Ahtopol has a humid subtropical climate (according to the Köppen climate classification), bordering on a Mediterranean climate with a limited continental effect.
Our walk through Ahtopol - a wonderful seaside town with a thousand-year history and remarkable treasures, continues!
History
The history of Ahtopol is extremely rich and spans millennia, testifying to continuous human presence and interaction with numerous cultures and civilizations.
Archaeological research reveals that the area has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, passing through the Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian and Ottoman periods.
This deep historical continuity and layering of different cultural layers make Ahtopol an extremely valuable site for archaeological research and understanding regional history.
The geographical location of Ahtopol on a rocky peninsula, in close proximity to the Black Sea and Strandzha Mountain, has served as a major factor in its historical significance.

This strategic location provided both convenient conditions for maritime trade and natural protection, which was essential throughout the centuries. The presence of a convenient harbor and access to the rich resources of the Strandzha Mountains, such as timber and honey, contributed to Ahtopol becoming an important commercial and cultural center.

This factor has attracted various civilizations, each of which has left its mark.

The continuous settlement from the Neolithic to the present day, along with the presence of cultural layers from different eras, shows that Ahtopol is not just a settlement, but a key portal for interaction between different cultures along the Black Sea coast.

This makes it extremely important for archaeological research, offering a glimpse into the development of human communities in this region over the millennia.

Archaeological data convincingly proves that the Ahtopol Peninsula has been inhabited since ancient times, with the earliest traces dating back to the Neolithic Age, around the middle of the 5th millennium BC.

Ahtopol has preserved significant spiritual monuments that reflect its deep religious history. Among them are the remains of the medieval monastery "St. John" (also known as "St. Yani"), dating back to the 12th century.

Another important spiritual monument is the church-monument "Holy Ascension of the Lord", built in 1776. This church, located by the seashore, is a testament to the restoration and strengthening of the Christian community in the city.

Ahtopol and its waters represent an exceptionally rich field for archaeological discoveries, which reveal the thousand-year maritime history of the city.
Artifacts from the waters of Ahtopol
Among the most significant artifacts are stone, lead and iron anchors, dating from the beginning of the 1st millennium BC to the 19th century. Some of these specimens were discovered for the first time on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, while others are considered unique for the maritime archaeology of the Mediterranean world.
In addition to anchors, among the finds from sunken ships – Turkish, Greek, French, Russian, Byzantine and Roman – were found ship cannons, mortars, coins, ceramics and bells.
These objects provide valuable information about maritime trade, shipping and military conflicts during different historical periods. The public collection "Museum of the Anchor" in Ahtopol also preserves numerous old maps, photographs and engravings that capture the history of the city and its inhabitants.

Returning to the starting position near the Ahtopol pier, I suggest you head north along Kraimorska Street.
The street offers the city's guests a diverse selection of pleasant restaurants with a wonderful view of the sea and a delicious menu.

Late Antique and Medieval Fortress
Since this is ancient Ahtopol, scattered throughout the city you will see fragments of a late antique and medieval fortress of the city of love and happiness – Agathopolis.

The stone steps along the ancient ruins will lead you back towards the golden domes of the Church of the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
I recommend you continue on "Kraymorska".
You will pass the old Greek house, perched on the slope of the rocky peninsula.

Wonderful sea panoramas open from the place, and on the steep slope, fragments of the ancient defensive fortress walls can once again be seen.

"Kraymorska" Street in Ahtopol is a really great choice for walks and I highly recommend you take it.

Unnoticeably, sharing the magic and freshness of the sea breeze, you will find yourself at the top of the rocky peninsula.

Along the wide avenue, it is possible to tour the entire peninsula, looking far into the distance.

There are pleasant places to eat and drink nearby, where you can quench your thirst and hunger.
