Updated: Feb 12, 2023

Dear friends of "Photo moments", I will present you another incredibly amazing place - a wonderful site in our Bulgaria.

Today we will walk along the trail to the St. George chapel above the village of Dushantsi.

And since this is ancient Bulgaria, I will tell you a story.

Once upon a time, very, very long ago, on the nearby hill, which is still known as "St. George", there was an old, medieval fortress, which was named "Goliamoto kale".

To the north of the hill and the fortress flows the river Topolnitsa, as it did thousands of years ago. From the southwest flows the river Kufarita (Kuforita according to some sources), which is its left tributary.

The old Kufarita Bridge is built over the river.

From the northeast, a steep and deep precipice makes access from this side impossible.

Only from the southeast was St. George hill accessible through a narrow saddle.

Today I take this trail - up to the hill.

The fortress once had an irregular, elongated shape.

There was also a very old church here, also named "St. George". Today, the chapel I headed to is built on its foundations.

The fortress once monitored and controlled the important roads in ancient times that passed by the fortress.

One of them, called "Dradulov cobblestone", was used until the Liberation for a connection between Koprivshtitsa and Zlatishko field. This road and to this day can be traced southeast of the village, crossing the river Kufarita on the old single-arched bridge.

Meanwhile, I find myself in the magical land of Narnia, described by Clive Staples Lewis (my very favorite Northern Irish writer).

Suddenly I see an old pillar with a lantern - like, among the trees in the forest. Just like in Narnia.

On the path up I see another pillar.

And already at the top the view to Dushantsi, to the Balkan and to the whole Zlatitsa-Pirdop valley is simply amazing!

I wish you an exceptional and impressive walk!
