On the trail to the cross above "Verigovo"

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

The last day of April is sunny, smiling and even hot.

I set off on a walk along the trail to the cross above the Verigovo neighborhood in our favorite Hisarya.

How to get to here?

The starting point is Ivan Vazov Boulevard, and at the end of it I turn onto Ivaylo Street, holding the cross in front of my eyes.

During my previous visit here I was a guest of Grandma Stoyna and St. Dimitar church and I had noticed signposts pointing the way to the cross.

That is why I get here relatively easily and quickly today.

And if you want to visit this place, you can guide the signs from Ivaylo Street, located in the most northwestern outskirts of Hisarya in Verigovo.

I go up the trail to the cross. It is called "Kliment Ohridski".

The trail is beautifully marked, I even soon I became aware I can't go wrong, because it is literally surrounded by small white stones, carefully collected and arranged, each in its place, by some honest and hardworking hand.

I think… what kind of love you have to keep in your heart and what a good and honest person you will be in order to shape and arrange such a path to this place that is sacred to the people of Verigovo!

Bravo to the people of Verigovo! Real people! Once again I am amazed!

I am soon greeted by the forest. And the first bench for rest and relaxation - right here under the shade of the first trees.

I stop!

I leave my backpack on the bench.

I rush to see the surroundings, which are so incredibly beautiful!

The still snowy ridges of the old Balkan are fading in the distance.

The green fields spreading around warm the heart.

The song of the birds wings.

The sound of the wind whispers a half-forgotten legend about brave people of the village and glorious times.

And Hisarya - beautiful, majestic, ancient, green and calm!

Momina Banya neighborhood can be seen in the distance. The cross above the neighborhood is also whitewashed opposite.

Calmness. Silence. There is absolutely no one around.

A small narrow trail passes from here. I take a photo. It is as if it flows into a large and wider road in the distance.

Contemplating this view, I recall verses from a favorite book!

The Road goes ever on and on,

Down from the door where it began.

Now far ahead the Road has gone,

And I must follow, if I can,

Pursuing it with eager feet,

Until it joins some larger way

Where many paths and errands meet.

And whither then? I cannot say.

Shy flowers peek over the grass and are happy to be photographed.

I rest well and head forward on the path of white stones.

I am amazed!

The Bulgarian tricolor proudly flies in front of me.

I continue along the path up and soon I'm on top.

There are a shed with benches and tables.

The cross is placed on a huge rock. A path surrounded by a railing leads to it.

There is a sign:

"In memory of the people of Verigovo!"

Here is the beautiful monument-chapel of St. George.

Arranged in flower beds, beautiful flowers grow on the sides.

The chapel was officially opened in 2016.

Monument-chapel of St. George was built meters from the existing church here, of the same name and burned down during the Turkish slavery.

The chapel was built with donations from the people of Hisarya and guests of the city, as well as from Bulgarians abroad.

The view is marbelous!

The path to the cross above "Verigovo" is suitable for people of all ages!

The terrain is not suitable for people in wheelchairs!

Have a charming walk!
