God the Son
In the unity of the Godhead are three Persons, equal in essence, power and eternity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God the Father was not born or created, nor did he come from anyone, the Son is eternally only-begotten of the Father, the Holy Spirit is eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son.
Already in the first verses of the first chapter of the first book of the Bible – Genesis, we read about God, the Spirit of God and the Word of God (the Son):
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said:
„Let there be light!“.
And there was light.
Genesis 1:1-3
In the Gospel of the Apostle John it is revealed that the Word is God and became man:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made that was made...
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth...
No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
John 1:1-3, 14, 18
God the Son – the second Person of the Trinity, is perfect and eternal God, consubstantial and equal with the Father.
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature, for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers, all things were created by him, and for him. And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Colossians 1:15-17
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.
Philippians 2:6-7
Although He was God the Son throughout all eternity, seated at the right hand of the Father, He deigned, when the appointed time had been fulfilled, to become the Son of Man, born of a woman in a lowly position.
Son of Man
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.
And the angel came in unto her, and said:
“Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women“.
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
And the angel said unto her:
“Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God and behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end“.
Then said Mary unto the angel:
„How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?”.
And the angel answered and said to her:
“The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God“.
Luke 1:26-35
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.
Galatians 4:4
The prophecy of the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled:
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
God the Son took on human nature with all its inherent qualities and weaknesses, but without sin – He was conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost in the womb of the virgin Mary from her essence. Thus, two whole and complete, but different natures, the divine and the human, were inseparably united in one Person, without passing into each other, without combining or mixing. This Person is fully God and fully man.
For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Colossians 2:9
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying:
„Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying: „Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.“
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife, and knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son, and he called his name JESUS.
Matthew 1:18-25
Jesus – Savior
He was called Jesus because he was appointed by God to save His people from their sins.
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria).
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them:
„Fear not, for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Luke 2:1-11
Christ – Messiah, Anointed One
The Old Testament records prophecies about the coming of the Messiah – Anointed One (in Greek Christos).
From the Old Testament we also learn that only the Jewish prophets, priests and kings were anointed.
The anointing was performed in a ceremony in which oil was placed on their heads.
The New Testament does not mention that Jesus received any external anointing. The anointing that the prophets and apostles speak of is spiritual, supernatural – with the Holy Ghost.
He was called Christ because he was anointed by God with the Holy Ghost without limit and was thus set apart and given all authority and ability to fulfill the ministry of Prophet, Priest and King of His Church.
But unto the Son he saith:
„Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever, a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity, therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows“.
Hebrews 1:8-9
The Lord Jesus Christ, reading to the Jews the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah, revealed that it was fulfilled in Him:
„The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.“
Luke 4:18-19
Christ performs the ministry of Prophet by revealing to the Church throughout the ages, in various ways, through His Spirit and His Word, the entire will of God concerning all that is necessary for the instruction and salvation of believers.
Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you, searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire to look into.
1 Peter 1:10-12
Christ performs the ministry of a Priest by offering Himself once for all as a perfect sacrifice to God to make reconciliation for the sins of His elect, and by interceding continually for them.
Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 2:17
But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people‘s for this he did once, when he offered up himself. For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity, but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
Hebrews 7:24-28
Christ performs the ministry of King by calling out to Himself from the world men, and giving them ministers, laws, and sanctions, by which He manifestly governs them, by bestowing saving grace upon His chosen ones, by rewarding their obedience and rebuking them for their sins, by protecting and supporting them in all their temptations and sufferings, by restraining and conquering all their enemies, and by His power ordaining all things for His own glory and their good, and also by inflicting vengeance upon the rest who do not know God and do not obey the gospel.
But the LORD shall endure for ever, he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.
Psalms 9:7-8
For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king, he will save us.
Isaiah 33:22
Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
Acts 5:31
And he gave some, apostles, some, prophets, and some, evangelist, and some, pastors and teachers. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-12
As many as I love, I rebuke and hasten, be zealous therefore, and repent.
Revelation 3:19
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Mattew 16:27
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory, and before him shall be gathered all nations, and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats.
And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand:
„Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat, I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink, I was a stranger, and ye took me in, naked, and ye clothed me, I was sick, and ye visited me, I was in prison, and ye came unto me“.
Then shall the righteous answer him, saying:
„Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? Or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we a stranger, and took thee in? Or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?“.
And the King shall answer and say unto them:
„Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me“.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand:
„Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat, I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink, I was a stranger, and ye took me not in, naked, and ye clothed me not, sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not“.
Then shall they also answer him, saying: „Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?“.
Then shall he answer them, saying:
„Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me“.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.
Matthew 25:31-46
As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be in the end of this world.
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity. And shall cast them into a furnace of fire, there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Mattew 13:40-43
The Apostle Paul also writes about this:
When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power, when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power. That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 1:7-12
The Apostle John, in the last chapter of the last book of the Bible – Revelation, recorded the words of God the Son:
„And, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star...
He which testifieth these things saith: Surely I come quickly. Amen.“
Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
